Playing Catch-Up

Get ready for an epic (and rare apparently) blog post today. I have lots to catch up on ! It's nothing too exciting. Just a few pictures that I had on my phone.

1.  My nephew celebrated his 6th birthday. I can't believe he is that old. Time surely does fly!

2. I never shared my Halloween decorations. Not that it is anything special, but I did add some LED stick lights to my ferns to add some extra light out there for the trick-or-treaters. 

And speaking of those massive ferns. I had to bring them in when it turned a little bit cooler and it is like a jungle in my kitchen. 

Please ignore the plates on the wall. I am missing one that I need to hang and some other stuff that needs to go up there as well to balance everything out. But seriously- look how big those ferns are and how they dwarf that bench! Thanks Miracle Grow. 

3. Oyster weather! I have really taken advantage of these cooler temperatures and the fact that it is perfect oyster weather. The other weekend, David and I went and grabbed 1/2 bushel and went to town! We set up the TV outside to watch some football and it was perfect. 

This past weekend, my brother, his wife, and Barrett came and stayed with me and we got some more oysters and watched some more football on the patio. 

In other oyster-related news: David and I were invited to an oyster roast in Savannah a couple of months back. Guess the Charleston/coastal/northern communities don't eat raw oysters, they roast them. I'll take mine raw. Thank you very much (or fried of course, I am still a southern girl!). But it was in a great place on the marsh on Wilmington Island. 

David wanted to stay on the dock forever and watch the sting rays. It was pretty fascinating to watch them. 

4. The other weekend we had a girls weekend in Destin. My mom, her sister (whom I refer to as Birdie and you can too), and my cousin Stacey had a great time soaking in some south Walton County, FL goodness. 

Now living in Georgia, I really miss being able to slide over to Destin anytime. I used to sneak off to Destin during college on my breaks to do a little shopping. It was great! Or Stacey and I would meet up there to do our annual Christmas shopping together. Sigh...dang you , Georgia! :-) 

On Saturday we drove over to Seaside for lunch and ate at Bud and Alley's. It's great if for none other than the dachshund on their sign :-D

We ate up on the top deck and the weather was absolutely divine!

5. Now for the one thing I have done that I was truly the most excited about! First off, there was a whole lotta documentary watching this last couple of weeks. 

That's right!!!! SQUEAL!! The Eagles concert was this past week!

My brother Brad and I drove up to Birmingham, AL to meet David. We stayed with David's sweet, sweet sister, Frances. We had a blast! It's always fun to be in the car with your sibling for 5+ hours, right? Ha! He's a mess for sure. I brought my ipad with me so that he could watch the Eagles documentary on the way up there (it is almost right at 4 hours long) to get him pumped up. We got to Birmingham in the middle of rush hour. I was driving. He looks up does, a little scream, tries to push his imaginary breaks and then proclaims that he is just going to focus on his movie and not look up. He didn't want to see death before him on the road. Ha! I'm not that bad a driver I assure you. 

Frances took us for a little tour of Birmingham while we were there. We went and saw the Vulcan, which was pretty neat. 

The views were absolutely stunning from up there. We had a fabulous time and I was so happy to get to see the Eagles before they break up again. Ha!

6. I decided that it wasn't too early to start getting into the Christmas spirit. I pulled out my Christmas wreath. It looks so itty bitty in this picture. Thanks iphone :-)

7. And just because it wouldn't be a post of mine until one of my little boys showed their face, here is JJ and his special friend. 

He and Brutus have fought over this stuffed dachshund more than anything else. Guess they just love him that much.

DIY Collegiate Wreath

It's the best time of year! Football season, that is. To get ready for this weekend and the kickoff of the season, I decided to make a wreath for my front door.

I have noticed that when I am bored, my go-to project seems to be door hangings. Weird, I know.

This was a quick and easy project. Here are the supplies that I gathered to make this wreath:

• Foam wreath form
• Floral Pins
• 3 Burlap Ribbon Spools - I believe this is a 3-4" wide x 15 ft spool that I got from Hobby Lobby
• Burlap Ribbon or whatever you would like to make the bow
• Coordinating fabric
• Tacky Glue
• Wood Letters
• Craft Paint

Of course, use whatever your team colors are. Since I'm a Gator girl, my wreath is orange and blue, of course! 

First, wrap your wreath with the burlap ribbon. I used 1 15 ft. ribbon to cover the base. Just secure every once and a while with floral pins. 

Then it's time to start adding the "fluff" part to the wreath. This is however is easiest for you and what looks good to your eye. 

I basically just worked from one side of the wreath across to the other side. The ribbon will tell you where to go. Just secure each loop with a floral pin as you go. I think I used about 1 1/2 of the remaining spools of ribbon to finish this part. 

Now it's time to start adding your fabric flowers. I will go ahead and apologize for this part. I got so consumed making the flowers, that I didn't stop to take any pictures. But I promise, they are so simple to make. 

First, cut out a length of fabric approximately 22 in. x 4 in.

Next, glue the long sides together with the tacky/fabric glue. So now you are left with a 22x2 in. length of fabric.

Now, you will go and start cutting slits in the folded part of the fabric (Not the side you glued together).

This is where the pictures end. But the rest is super simple. Take a small piece of coordinating fabric that you want to be the center of each flower. Place that on one end of the cut fabric and begin to wrap the length of fabric around to form a flower. Use the tacky glue every so often to keep the fabric in place. Once that is finished, glue a floral pin to the back so that you can stick that in your wreath. 

For the letters, I just painted them with craft paint and then glued some floral pins in the back. Those got added to the wreath as well. 

Then just add a ribbon or bow to the top and hang it!

The beauty of this wreath is that you can add anything that you like on it. Now, go show your team spirit and make one of these today.

Ashley Lately

Before I get started with this post let me just throw this out there.... LSWHO?!?!?

That's right! My Gators are turning out to be the little engine that could this year. Who would have thunk it? David and I were in the big metropolis of Baxley, GA this weekend attending a wedding, so I didn't get to watch the game. I had no idea what time they were even playing, but when I got to the wedding, a fellow Gator fan had their phone out getting updates and it was the 4th quarter, with seconds to go...and we were winning. I thought it was a joke, because I just knew LSU was going to spank us good. I was super excited. After our less than stellar first games, I just knew that we would have another season like last year. Those 'ole boys of Florida have surprised me. Can I get a Go Gators?!?!?

Speaking of the wedding this weekend, I did something unspeakable. I actually forgot to bring my camera. I couldn't believe I had dumbly forgotten that I had my camera at work and drove off without it. So, no pictures. It was a fun wedding and I was happy to see Crystal and Justin get married. They have just recently moved to Thomasville, so luckily David and I get to see them fairly often now.

Last night, I finished up the book Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.

I have to admit, this book was completely psychotic- with all kinds of twists and turns in the storyline. It is about a married couple, Amy and Nick who are having some issues with their marriage. They were both writers in New York and when they both lost their jobs, they moved to Nick's hometown in Missouri. Amy resents Nick for moving her and Nick resents Amy for resenting the fact that they moved. So, typically, Nick starts cheating on his wife with a 22 year old student of his. Then Amy disappears on their 5th wedding anniversary. Nick becomes the prime suspect with motivation- a very wealthy wife who holds the deed to his bar that would revert to her if they divorced and a very young girlfriend. The ending was a little less that stellar and weird, but I would still recommend the book.

The other book I finished reading was Freakonomics.

Granted, this book has been out for a long time, so I'm a little late reading it. But usually when I go to the bookstore, I like to get one just-for-fun read and one book that is somewhat informative. Either a historical book, an autobiography (or biography) or a book on some type of relevant topic. This book just got my attention one day while browsing the Business section of Books a Million. Nothing like reading about some economics to get your day started. Ha! But this isn't normal economic-type topics. It goes through random stuff like the drop in crime in the mid 90s was due to Roe vs Wade and cheating in sumo wrestling. That kind of random stuff. It was interesting to think about these various topics in a different way. It's a good read if you need some conversational topics at your next business dinner.

Those are the latest books I have read. Guess I will need to stop by the bookstore again and load up. If you have any good book suggestions, let me know!

Tail-Gator

This weekend Stacey and I journeyed up to Auburn to go see some friends, tailgate, and watch our two teams battle it out. Of course my poor little Gators didn't fair so well this weekend. Boo! But I still had a great time, nonetheless. It was nice to get out of Georgia for a bit and have a little fun.

This was my first Florida game I have been to in probably 5 years, since I could never get Joseph, the big UGA fan to go with me, so please excuse the navy and orange outfit. Royal blue isn't a color I normally wear. Ha!

This is Cristy. She did a wonderful job planning the tailgate and bringing all the food and supplies and everything. She's the bomb {dot} com.

I had to make Stacey take this picture. You see that cooler sitting there? Yeah. That thing is a beast. We had to do a team carry and lug that thing for what felt like 50 miles to the tailgate site along with chairs and other stuff. We took lots of breaks, if you can imagine. (And its heavier than it looks! Trust me)

I did get a lot of this look this weekend...

That is Stacey's "Really" face. I get that look a lot from her. Ha ha. I usually do or say something dumb, and Stacey tilts that head and dryly says "really?" I was very excited to catch this elusive look on film. She was probably giving me this look for wearing my sweet sticker a guy gave me.

Yep. That was probably what did it! Or it was probably just me in general. Ha ha!



All in all we had a great time and I look forward to the next time we go up there. An added bonus to our weekend was on Sunday, Stacey's mom (or my aunt, Birdie) and our grandmother came and joined us in Montgomery for brunch after they dropped a friend off with her son in Auburn. So it was nice to get to see them briefly before heading back home. So that is our weekend in Auburn in a nutshell. Not too much to write about. We went, we saw, we ate. That's about it!

Is it the Weekend Yet?

This has been a rough week! My assistant Gracie has been gone for a week and she finally got back today. I wanted to kiss her when she walked in the door, I was so happy to see her back this morning. I appreciate all she does, that's for sure! Needless to say, I'm ready for this work week to be finished. But also because...

We will be heading out tomorrow to go tailgate at the Florida/Auburn game. I'm super pumped and ready to get out of Georgia for a bit.  Should be a good time. Although after the two beatings Florida has recently had, I don't know if I'm gonna be a happy girl. But then again, Auburn's had a rough go of it lately. It will probably be a battle to see who sucks the least! Either way, win or lose, I will still have a fabulous time. I haven't completely decided on my game day attire. I picked up a cheapo orange and blue dress at Target yesterday, so I might wear that with cowboy  boots or some skinny jeans and a sweater if it's gonna be a bit cooler. Guess I need to check the weather.

And just because I love a potato, I saw this recipe on Layla's blog over at the Lettered Cottage. It's for some ranch potatoes. It looks Ah-mazing! So, this is randomly going in my post. Ha ha!!

Wreath-Making 101

Ok, this post has a little to do with college football. I know I'm breaking my promise from yesterday. Remember the Florida wreath from a previous post? I decided to make Stacey one for her door, since she liked this idea. So that's just what I did. Nothing I wouldn't do for Stacey Suzanne :-) Anyways, I went to Hobby Lobby and grabbed some stuff to make the wreath.

I bought a foam wreath, some floral pins, blue ribbon to cover the wreath, geo mesh ribbon, letters, spray paint, and some decorative ribbon. First, I spray painted the letters.

I realized when I got started that this was on one of the pages of newspaper I was using:

Yeah, that handsome little man in the middle is my nephew, Barrett. Oops. I couldn't help it that the only paper I had around was an old County Record.

Next, I covered the form with blue ribbon and then attached the geo mesh ribbon to the form with the floral pins.

Sorry for the crappy pictures. My camera battery was dead, so I just used my camera on my iPhone. Then I added the orange ribbon. And for the record, yes I realize that the blue is not navy like Auburn. But they didn't have navy geo mesh and everywhere I looked online was sold out. So she is getting a Gator colored Auburn wreath. Part her, part me. We complete each other. (and Stacey just gagged reading this, lol)

Finally, Stacey got impatient and hot glued the letters on. Guess I was taking too long to get it done. Haha. This is the semi-finished project.

I ran out of orange ribbon, so I am going back to Hobby Lobby today and hopefully they will have some more so I can make a bow. I also think I am going to get more letters and spell out Auburn and either get a tiger or some footballs kinda like in the photo below. Oh and fix that orange ribbon. It doesn't look even.

I do like the grape vine wreath too. Maybe the next one... And I feel better that whoever made that wreath also used royal blue instead of navy. At least I'm not the only one.

So that is my little project that I recently worked on. Guess our neighbor liked it so much, she wants me to make her six wreaths for her in her son's college colors. Sounds like I will be busy for a bit. Which reminds me, that I need to call her and get that set up. Happy crafting, ya'll!

I have a real post today, but first...

This is really just for some giggles. So if you don't like college football, feel free to ignore this post. I was reading up on all the online commentary from the games this past weekend. The Auburn game was great and I swear they have a deal with the devil. They always scrap by somehow! Take a look at this write up that sums up my sentiments about the AU. The Gators looked ok, but UAB wasn't that big of a match up. The Georgia-South Carolina game was a good one too. The dawgs looked a little better from last week. And I think Mark Richt is an awesome guy and I would hate to see him fired, but I have gotten lots of satisfaction watching the dawgs go down in flames every week. Who says God doesn't have a sense of humor? And very fitting, the first team they lost to was decked out in orange and blue and this week they lost to Steve Spurrier. God did say revenge was His.... So if UGA goes 0-12 this season, they can blame it all on my husband because I have been praying for just that ;-) Ok, ok I am kidding (half-way). Anyways, I came across this article and I was laughing out loud. I thought it was pretty funny. It was written by a guy named William Wallace, so reading this article, I was giving it a Scottish accent to boot (that's a Braveheart reference, btw "I am william wallace!"). Nevermind. After all that, Spurrier punts. No wonder Garcia drinks so much.

Uber-Freshman Jadeveon Clowney burns through the shaky Georgia O-line and crushes Aaron Murray. Clowney is real strong and real fast. He’ll be the #1 pick in the 2014 Draft.

Mark Richt attempts a surprise onside kick that was executed perfectly, with the exception of Bacardi Rambo being one inch offsides. I love the call and really enjoy Mark Richt when he’s on the verge of getting fired. He’s very creative.

Melvin Ingram goes 68 yards on a fake punt run for a touchdown. That’s right, Melvin Ingram, the 276-pound DE gets the ball on a critical fake punt call and goes 68 yards and he was pulling away from people. Unreal. He doesn’t look like a Melvin.

Spurrier wants Mark Richt’s heart on a platter. Spurrier single-handedly ended the careers of former Georgia Head Coaches Ray Goff and Jim Donnan, and today he wants to be the guy who finishes off Mark Richt.

Kind of like Favre with the Jets, where his typical game consisted of 3 cross-body TD throws, 3 cross-body INTs and 3 wiener pics to skanks he casually knows.

Murray is showing nice poise after the interception. He starts drive 85 yards from the end zone and quickly went to work hitting 4 separate receivers and get near midfield before the end of the quarter.

Aaron Murray was masterful on this drive going 8 for 8 for 85 yards including a 19-yard TD pass to Michael Bennett. He kept the momentum going with a beautiful 2-pt conversion pass to Tavares King to tie the game. He’s owning the moment.

Enough with all this quarterback talk, it’s the 4th quarter and Marcus Lattimore doesn’t get tired. He looks fresh and is picking up yards by the bunches. He grabs 41 yards on 4 carries. He’s over 120 yards and there is plenty of game left.

With that said, Stephen Garcia looks like someone who still has a ‘Nader for President’ sticker on the back of his 1989 Chevy G Van.
Lattimore’s legs and a few Alshon Jeffery catches lead to a Jay Wooten FG.

Marcus Lattimore is the best RB on the field, but the margin is closer than I expected. Isaiah Crowell is a stud. Matt Millen put it perfectly, “He is who he was supposed to be.” He stiff arms Antonio Allen and puts it in from 15 yards out, giving Georgia the lead. The crowd is loudly and obnoxiously screaming, “Herschel, Herschel, Herschel, Herschel, Herschel, Herschel.”

South Carolina doesn’t look rattled. Garcia hits Ace Sanders on a scrambling 30-yard lob pass that takes the Gamecocks down to the Georgia 38. It’s taken him a while to realize he’s playing football in a big football game today but that throw was big time and it quieted the liquored-up Georgia fans in a hurry.

If that play quieted the fans down, Marcus Lattimore’s 36-yard run to the 1-yard line straight shut them up. He pumps it in 2 plays later, but not before Garcia burns the final South Carolina timeout.
Lattimore’s gone over 160 yards on the day. Isaiah Crowell should be taking notes.

Clowney hit Murray before the QB could even look up field. Murray was so shocked to be getting hit, he dropped the ball and Melvin Ingram, Baller, was right there to pick it up and dance the ball into the end zone. The rest of the SEC will quickly join Georgia in hating Jadeveon Clowney. Damn, he’s good.

Spurrier just took his shirt off and cracked open a Busch Light. Garcia strolls over, smoking a cigarette and high fives the coach. These two are magic together.

While the fans were leaving, Aaaron Murray was leading. He drove the Dawgs down the field quickly and connected with Tavarres King for a 33-yard TD. Great throw, better catch. It’s a 3 point game with 2:15 left.

We’re only 2 weeks into the season and the SEC has already seen 1 game change on an onside kick (Auburn vs. Utah State) and Mark Richt needs another one.
“Stud” – Matt Millen’s response after seeing 265 lb DE Melvin Ingram picks the onside kick out of the air. He’s a 265 lb DE and he’s on the HANDS TEAM. I love this guy.

Chances Mark Richt is Fired Tonight: 20%.

He’s coached a good game and his team got beat by a slightly better team tonight. I still think he’ll be fired at some point, just not tonight. If they keep giving up 40 points a game, it might happen very soon.

Marcus Lattimore never gets tired and he’s going to run out the clock. He’s got 176 yards on the night. Awesome. How good is Lattimore? Steve Spurrier’s disappointment as he shakes hands with Mark Richt is obvious. He wanted to be the guy who ended Mark Richt. If I had to guess the guy that will end Richt’s career, I’m leaning towards Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen.

The good news is whoever takes over for Richt will have some talent on the roster to work with.

I love a sports writer who isn't afraid to put in a good Beverly Hills 90210 reference in there! Ok, enough football for a while but I thought this guy's commentary was just too funny not to share. I have an arts and crafts project to share soon and a few other things rolling around in this crazy brain of mine. Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and I just want to say that the coverage on the 10 year anniversary of 9/11 still brings back emotions that are still very raw within my heart and this country. We will never forget that awful day in our country's history. Evil is very much alive in this world and we got to see that evil manifest itself live on television. I am proud of my country and proud of the brave men and women who lost their lives that day and all the brave soldiers that I have died or risked their lives since. We will never forget.

Procrastination at it's finest

Today I have A LOT of stuff to do, but right now I am really putting it off. I had to take a quick break and rest my mind for a minute before getting back to it. Right now I can barely see my desk anymore.

After this short break I will get all this stuff knocked out. And since I included this picture, I figured I would show you a couple of special things in my office. First, this:

This is my going away present from the museum. It is a paper weight. The picture inside is one that I did, so it has sentimental value that they chose to use that picture (It is a rendering of the Lapham-Patterson House in Thomasville that the Historical Society manages). And what girl's office isn't complete with out this?

That's right, ladies and gentlemen. The 2011 SEC Football Helmet Schedule. I love this thing. I print it out every year. I do need to find a pretty frame to put it in though. It just being taped on the wall is pretty tacky. I think I have just the frame at home and it will even match the blue wall in my office. Other than those two things, I haven't done anything to decorate and/or personalize my office. I plan on doing that soon. Maybe you can "Find Nemo" in my top picture above, but I hate to break it to Nemo, he needs to go. So I am on the lookout for some pictures to hang on the wall. Theoretically, it would be nice to hang my diploma on my wall, but it was never framed {hint, mother} but that's ok. Oh- did I mention that I graduated from college SEVEN years ago? I think at this point I should give up on that ever happening. Ok. I have rambled on enough and I realize that this is a really random post, but that is where my head is today. Terribly scatter brained and fried. Back to the grind. Hopefully tomorrow I will have a little more time to think of something more interesting. Happy Wednesday, ya'll!
