It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

It's Football Season, Ya'll!! Football season is met with the same enthusiasm as Christmas over here at the Bryan household. But it is better in some ways, you still get to gather with family and friends and eat and don't have to worry about buying a boat load of presents! Just some game-day snacks and beverages, and you are ready for a party! I have to say, that nobody does football better than the SEC. That is one thing Joseph and I actually agree on! He is a huge Georgia Bulldog fan, and I am a huge Florida Gator fan. So we mix like oil and water when it comes to our teams. And of course, the UGA/UF rivalry is one of the biggest in the nation. Hello? We don't even play each other on our home fields. So from time to time it can get pretty ugly around here. October 30th will be no exception either. That's why on that day, I will not be watching the game with my otherwise lovely husband. I will probably be in the good state of Florida, where I belong. I just pray that UGA has a good year. It makes for a lot happier Joseph and a much happier Ashley!

Both teams kick off on Saturday. UGA against UL Lafayette and UF against Miami-Ohio. Always have to start the season with a warm-up game. But I would much rather watch in-conference games. Florida gets their first taste against Tennessee and Georgia against Arkansas on September 18th. So let's all get ready for sitting on the couch, watching Game Day until our games come on and get in the football state of mind. Oscar has both Flordia and Georgia jerseys. Guess I need to get the little ones their own too. I'm thinking they will all switch shirts every Saturday, just to keep things fair.

And here is my favorite schedule for the SEC, the helmet schedule. I would normally have this posted up in my office somewhere, but since I only work 4 hours a day, I don't see that happening this year. HA HA!

                Sept. 4        Sept. 11      Sept. 18       Sept. 25        Oct. 2           Oct.9       Oct. 16        Oct. 23         Oct. 30      Nov. 6         Nov. 13      Nov. 20     Nov. 27

So here's to all my fellow football fans. Men, enjoy yourselves. Wives, get ready to be ignored at least one day out of the week!!

As Joseph would say, guess it's time for me to break out the cut-off blue jean shorts and start picking my boogers, like a true Florida fan. (that's a myth to all you Georgia fans out there) GO GATORS!! (and if I have to, Go Dawgs!!) Oh, and I will throw in a Weagle, weagle, war damn eagle for my AU buddies!!

A Blessing From Above

One true blessing that God has given me is the privilege of knowing two great men. Both men were true men of faith, farmers, served their country proudly, loved their wives of 50+ years with all their hearts, and were the heart and soul of their families. More importantly, they were both grandfathers. One has been gone from this earth for 14 years, the other just recently went to be with his Father this past week. While the earth has lost two wonderful men, heaven has gained two beautiful angels. One of these great men, was my own grandfather, Ray Purvis. The other, my cousins' grandfather, Royce Ward. This past week as we said goodbye to Paw Paw, as he was known to his grandchildren, my heart went out to my cousins who grieved his loss. It is a very hard and painful thing to say goodbye to someone who has been such an important part of your life. And it was hard on me watching them go through this, because those feelings are still raw within me, 14 years later after my grandfather's death. It is hard watching people that you love have to go through something so hard, and I wish I could bear every tear, every heartache for them if I could because I love them all so much. But I also have to celebrate the fact that we all had such wonderful, loving men to look up to and to love us all. And that is worth all the gold on this earth. So while we may be saddened, we have the knowledge that our grandfathers are with their maker in glory, praising God's name in their perfect bodies, and watching over us, like they did here on earth. So this is my little way of paying tribute to these two people that we have loved so dearly.

For many, many years their were four of us. My brother Brad, my cousins Heath and Stacey, and me. We are related through our mothers, which are sisters. And we are all stair steps. First Brad, then Heath, then me, and poor little Stacey bringing up the rear. (for some reason, she hardly ever made it into any pictures when we were little. We are still unsure where she was. Of course this is an inside joke) Our maternal grandfather died before any of us were born, so we never had the privilege of knowing him. So our paternal grandfathers had to do double duty to make up for his absence, and they more than exceeded that challenge. We spent most summers together, either at their home in Walnut Hill, our home in Blountstown, or at their grandfather's farm in Dutch Bend, AL. So needless to say, their family is like my family and visa versa. We are all close and those bonds are something that I deeply cherish. We all lean on each other. We laugh together and cry together and I wouldn't have it any other way. I say all of this because many of my memories of their grandfather have to do with the summers that I spent either in Dutch Bend or at their home in Walnut Hill. I always loved going to see Paw Paw and Grandmommy. They always made me feel like I was a true Ward, just another grandchild. When we would stay in Dutch Bend, Stacey and I would usually sneak off to her grandparents trailer, because we knew that they would give us popsicles and other treats when our parents would not. Plus they had the pool! But what I loved even more was watching Stacey climb up in her grandfathers lap after he had come in from the field. I'm sure he was tired but he always had time for Stacey to come and tell him about her day. Usually it consisted of telling him what a horror Heath was and probably that I was bossing her around. He was a great man, and I know that his legacy will live on because I see so much of him in my Uncle Brett, and in Heath and Stacey. They all have a true strength and from having observed their grandfather for almost 30 years, I know exactly where it comes from and it is from him. I am so very thankful that Heath and Stacey had such an example to look up to and to learn from. Not only did they learn many life lessons from him, but they got to see what true love really looks like. Not just the love that he had for them, but the love he had for his wife. My prayer is that Joseph and I can have one ounce of what Royce and Marilyn had. If we can achieve that then we can consider ourselves blessed. If I can be half the grandparent that he was I will be blessed. I could always see the love pour out of him onto Heath and Stacey.  They were the apple of his eye and I had the honor of seeing that proud look each time he looked at them, whether they saw it or not. And anyone that has ever met my Uncle Brett would know that it took someone truly amazing to raise such a man as he is. So this is my little thank you to Paw Paw for being a loving grandfather and father to the people that I love the most. You did fight the good fight, and and you should be so proud at what you accomplished. Worldly things aside, you raised a beautiful family and were a true testament to Christ.

Memories of Paw Paw also brought back memories of my own grandfather this week. My Papa Ray was the light of my life. The Lord truly blessed me with a grandfather that was patient and loving. I know I was his favorite and nobody could convince me otherwise. There is just a special bond between a grandfather and a granddaughter. I will cherish the short 14 years that I got to spend with him. I just like to think that he was so special that the Lord couldn't stand not to have him with him for another day. And truthfully, I couldn't blame Him! Every summer, I would go stay with my grandparents for a week or two. Papa would always take time to ride bicycles with me up and down that dirt road for as long as I wanted. If I couldn't find him in the house, all I had to do was walk outside the barn and find him tinkering on something out there. A trait that he passed down to my father, is to never throw anything away. Any piece of scrap metal was thrown in a heap in the hope that one day it could be used to fix something else. My favorite times were to get in his lap in his recliner and pull out the globe. He would show me all the countries that he had visited during his time during WWII and tell me all kinds of stories. To this day, I have a globe in my house, not because it is decorative, but because it reminds me of him and all those stories that we would talk about. I also have great memories of my grandparents in Blountstown. They had a trailer on the family farm that they would stay in for several weeks at a time. And when they were in town me and Brad would stay with them. Every morning we would have to get up and they would take us home so mom could take us to school. He would always let me or Brad drive on the dirt road to the highway. I always thought that was the coolest thing! One thing I really miss is at night when I stay at my grandmothers. I would always sleep with Mama Bernice and Brad would always sleep with Papa Ray. But at night when we would turn out the lights, Papa would always say, "Goodnight, Mama". And to this day when I lay down at her house, I still expect to hear those words when I turn out the lights. One very happy memory is every Christmas morning, Papa Ray would always get up and start clapping his hands and would start singing "Christmas times a-comin". Every Christmas morning that is the first thing that enters my mind and I can still hear his voice singing. I could go on and on about my memories, but these are just a few that come to mind. I can't wait to tell my children what a wonderful grandfather that I had. And I know that they will have an idea, because my dad is so similar to my grandfather. I see Papa Ray in him every time I see him with my nephew and I think that it is the sweetest thing. My dad, like my grandfather, is always tinkering on something, always willing to take you on a ride on a tractor, takes you fishing, picks on you, or gives you a big hug. So I know that even though my children will never get to meet their great-grandfather, they will see him through their own grandfather. They may not realize that they are experiencing Papa Ray, but I will know. And as I journey to have my children, I like to think that Papa Ray is holding that baby in his arms and taking care of it until the Lord sends it to me. I know this because I know my nephew Barrett has seen him, because Papa has kissed his toes (don't ask), just to let us know that he is there taking care of our children. I also like to think that Papa welcomed Royce home and had a good conversation about their granddaughters. Hopefully we make them proud. And I hope that in addition to their mansions in the sky that the Lord gave those simple farmers a piece of land that they could grow their crops on. Because like Royce, my grandfather instilled in me a love of the land that only a farmer could appreciate. We are grounded in our Father up above because only farmer knows what it is to truly nurture God's creation.  Our grandfathers are our roots and they are what help make us grow into the people that we are.

Thank you God, for giving me a compass by which to live. Thank you for the years that I had to know and love my grandfather. Thank you for making him an example on how to live my daily Christian walk with you. Thank you for your grace and the knowledge that I will get to spend eternity with you and your son and with those that I hold dear. Thank you because I know that there is a better home waiting in the sky. I just pray for your comfort to Royce's family. Please fill them up with your spirit and give them the strength to carry on. It is only by your mercy and grace that we can hope. This is not the end. This is not the last we will see their faces. Thank you with blessing this earth with such Godly men. Thank you for giving us Grandfathers.

Saline Sonogram

WARNING: This is a very gross, graphic post. So prepare yourself!

Ok, I probably have ammo for my children, when they are being ungrateful,  for the next thirty years after this bad boy! Today I had my saline sonogram. This is to check for any blockages, abnormalities, etc. in your womanly parts. I thought this was kinda wasted on me since I had no tubes or anything to worry about blockages. But they did it anyway, and I survived. And everything turned out looking okay, thank goodness! But I'm not gonna lie, this procedure was not fun. My doctor recommended taking two aleve or something an hour before coming in because some women experience "light cramping". Yeah, I didn't believe her, and thank goodness! I took one hydrocodone pill left over from my surgery before I went and I can only imagine what it would have felt like if I had just taken an Aleve! It wouldn't have done anything!! It was not "light cramping" for sure! Granted, it wasn't the worst thing to have to done to you I guess, but it didn't feel good, that's for sure! The whole thing didn't last but about 20 minutes from start to finish, so that was good.

The whole thing started out with getting the "jaws of death" so I call them. All ladies that have ever had a pap smear know what I'm talking about. These puppies are not the most comfortable things, but I guess they open you up really nice. (sorry I'm being so graphic, but that is how it is! ) Then they put a tube up into my uterus and attached it to my inside. That was probably the most uncomfortable thing! Then they took the ultrasound thingy and stuck it up in there. Then she started injecting saline solution into the tube that they inserted. Then she moved the ultrasound stick around to view all parts of my uterus and womanly parts to make sure there wasn't anything funky going on. Then, thankfully she was done!

For the most part, it really just felt like the worst menstrual cramps you could imagine. And I have had some bad ones in my day, but just add the embarrassment factor to it. So just some cramping and a few pinches every now and again. All in all, it wasn't too terribly bad, just very, very uncomfortable with a little bit of pain thrown in. So if this is the worst that this process can bring, I should be alright. I will let you know in a few weeks when I have to give myself a shot, then my tune might change!!

So if you find yourself having to have one of these things, I would strongly suggest you taking a very strong pain medication beforehand. It will really help. But in the end it is all worth the pain, because I know what I did today is only a hole in the bucket compared to childbirth!! So ladies, just hang in there. It's not too bad and is over before you know it!

In other baby-making news, J goes tomorrow to do his thing and make his contribution to the process. They are just checking his junk out to make sure he is healthy. (and I am sure he would appreciate me announcing that to the whole world!) Then I go back in a week for a normal ultrasound. I start on Saturday taking my ovulation tests. I was pretty shocked how expensive those bad boys were. But I guess it helps the doctors get a sense on when I do my thing for retrieval later. For now, that is all that we are doing. I will update next week after my appointment for what comes next!

PSA for Lazy People

The craze right now in exercise is Zumba. Well, I have found something better than Zumba, the Roomba! Yes that's right. Instead of getting in some "light" exercise while cleaning, now all I have to do is lay on the couch and watch my little robotic friend clean for me.
image from www.irobot.com
I haven't named my little friend yet, but I'm thinking about it! It has to be a name that is super awesome for a super awesome vacuum. I scheduled Mr. Roomba to clean this morning at 7 AM and he didn't sleep late. We heard him turn on and get to cleaning. He had our entire house cleaned in about 1.5 hours. And when he was done he happily took his cute patootie back to his docking station to recharge his precious little batteries. I know that Mr. Roomba will help me keep all the dust and grit to a minimum here in the Dapper Castle. I could sweep my floors twice a day and it would still need it the next morning. Now that we have nothing but wood floors this is really going to help out. I even sent my old vacuum a-packing to the prison that is our storage unit. I'm envisioning it hooking up with some random thing in there a-la the mop or broom in the Swiffer commercials.

iRobot has not paid me for this little commercial for this little man. But I love it so much I had to share. We have it scheduled to clean every other day while we are at work, so when we get home, everything is nice and clean. The only bad thing is that the dogs don't really care for it. They usually ignore it until it starts coming their way and they think it is chasing them. It is pretty funny actually. So if you are a busy gal like me, I would suggest you look into this product. It will really cut down your cleaning time, so you only have to do a deep cleaning of the floors like every two weeks or so. He vacuums hardwood, tile, carpet, rugs, you name it! So if you want to join me on the lazy train, here's your chance!! Jump on board!

Wait!?!?!? Is that water?

Yeah, you see this guy. He is a bad, bad boy. He decided that he wanted to flood my house. And do a lot of damage. And cause me to have to rip up my floors. And cause strange men to frolic through my house at all hours of the day. And to cause blowers and dryers to put out 110+ degree heat when it is already 110+ degrees outside. That's right folks, my washing machine decided to flood my house one day. Apparently there was some kind of crack in the wash basin and therefore leaked a whole loads worth of water into my house. This is what I had to deal with!!

Here are the pups surveying the damage and those really loud, hot things that magically appeared in our home! We ended up having to pull up the wood floors in the living room and the hallway due to water damage. Not the best thing to happen after being on vacation for over a week and having mountains worth of clothes to wash! It took about two weeks by the time the floors dried out enough to put down new ones and for the new floors to get put down. Not fun at all! Not to mention the fact that the whole time my house was turned upside down. For a while there, I thought TLC would have to come in and film an episode of Hoarders by the way my kitchen looked! Epic fail on the having to shimmy sideways to get anywhere in there!!

Yes. Super gross. But it turned out to be a blessing in disguise I guess. Got new floors and we expanded the wood floors to go into the bedrooms as well. We did this because we will probably never get this place sold, so we will have to rent it out I'm sure. So we thought that wood floors would be way better for renters than carpeting! We decided to go with a wider board this time. And hand scraped to hide any imperfections!! Here is the before and afters!

Sorry about the first picture, but that's the only one I could find that I had on this computer!! So that is the saga that is our floors/washing machine fiasco. Don't you just love unexpected home repairs?

On a positive note. I get something even better than new floors. I get this:

The ROOMBA!! It is a robotic floor vacuum that you can program to clean your floors for you. Otherwise, I would be doing nothing but sweeping all the time. I will let you know once it arrives how well it does. I think I am gonna like this bad boy!!

I Will Hope in Him!

After much thought, I have decided to put this post back up. As a lot of you know, I suffered a miscarriage back in April. It was due to an ectopic pregnancy. Needless to say, Joseph and I were devastated. We weren't planning on having a baby, so it was the shock of our lives. It was an even greater shock when we lost our precious child. However, by the grace of God, we learned to accept His decision. We know that we are in His hands and He takes care of his own. He grants comfort when it is needed. There is one verse that has given me much comfort throughout this whole ordeal.
I will never forget this awful time, as I grieve over my loss. Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is His faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. I say to myself, "The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in Him! ~Lamentations 3:20-24
I have debated on whether or not I would share my journey on here, but I decided it would be very therapeutic for me to share my story. I know that it is a great comfort for me to read stories of others who struggle through the same thing and I hope that my struggle will help somebody else. Joseph and I are about to begin the long journey of IVF. We went yesterday for our first consultation. We are having to go this route because I had an ovary removed about 8 years ago, due to an ovarian cyst. Then with our miscarriage, my remaining tube had to be removed as well. So needless to say, the plumbing isn't all connected correctly! So bring on the shots and pills and needles! We aren't completely in the stage of our lives where we are ready for children 100%, but due to my proneness to cysts and scar tissue/damage to my remaining ovary, we don't really have an option as to picking the absolute perfect timing. And that is fine because I have put my faith in the Lord and know that He will not fail us.

I go back to the doctor tomorrow to really begin the process. I have no real idea of what to expect, so it is a little scary. But I will try to post everything as it happens, so others who are about to go down this path for the first time can see what it is all about first hand. To begin with, they will monitor my cycle for a few months, and run some tests on Joseph and me just to make sure everything is a-ok. If all goes as planned, we should be ready for egg retrieval and implantation at the end of November. I knew that the Lord was guiding us in our decision when the doctor told us when we should expect a positive pregnancy test. When she told us that we could take a test around Christmas I just lost it because that would have been the due date of our child. So instead of Christmas being a somewhat sad day for me, it should *hopefully* be a day of joy and celebration. So I should have an entry tomorrow with all the gory details of my first visit!! So pray for us as we begin this long process. We are gonna need it!

Happy Birthday Alex!!

We had the honor of celebrating our sweet nephew's first birthday with him. It's amazing how time flies! It seems not too long ago we were just there visiting him after his birth. His mom and dad did a great job with his UGA themed birthday. Joseph was absolutely in love with his birthday cake!
"Wait, can I play with this?"
"I touched it and nobody stopped me. Mom, you do know I have icing on my hand right?"

"I'm going in!"
"Man, this is yummy! Happy Birthday to me!"

"Okay, I am exhausted now!"

We had an awesome time with our family and Joseph really loves getting to see all his siblings at the same time!
Joseph, Jeff, Mary Kathryn, MK's belly button, Patricia
We love you Alex, and look forward to many, many more wonderful birthdays!!
